The average American consumes 193 pounds of GMO’d fare per year, according to the Environmental Working Group. The crops most likely to be genetically modified are sugar beets (a common sweetener), soybeans, and corn. Currently, there are no long-term studies on the safety of genetically engineered foods, though they have been linked to cancer and weight gain. Another reason to buy organic whenever possible.
